brewing & wine making vessel stand details
Seems
the Sanke 1/2 bbl conversion is popular for home brewers because; it’s a decent
sized kettle able to brew a 5 or 10 gallon “finished” batch that can be found
for a reasonable cost. Beyond that and your pushing “brewery” status. The feds
say you can homebrew 200 gal per adult, per year, per household without being a
brewery business. That’s 80 cases..... enough? We like to make a 5 gallon batch
twice per month on average. You need to begin with around 8 gallons of wort to
finish near 5 gallons of beer after boiling, 13 or 14 for 10 finished gallons,
Sanke holds 15.5 gallons, perfect. 5 gallons makes ~2 cases(52 + or - bottles)
or fills a soda keg, also very popular for the “on tap” brewers. We bottle some
and keg some too, just plug in the Co2 and you can drink it as soon as it’s
cold. Instant carbonation, brew on tap. Bottle conditioning typically takes 2-3
weeks.
It’s not too easy to find a quality home brewing pot that
holds 8 gallons "cheap", especially stainless steel. So, the recycled 1/2 bbl
keg is perfect, when they can be found. They are expensive for the breweries and
they want them back. If you find them legit, they can go $70 and up in decent
condition. But, that’s not too bad compared to a SS pot that size, so they have
become popular with the home brewers. We also use 1/4 bbl kegs for make up
water, small boils etc. Many home brewers use plastic coolers and 5 Gal. water
jugs, but I think they would use SS kegs if they had them.
The Keglegs were designed with the Sanke style keg in mind
since they are “cool” and preferred for the sincere home brewers, but they will
accommodate many other pots also, but not all. There are so many different sizes
and diameters. Seems that a polished ˝ bbl is the ideal pot. Just set the pot in
the KegLegs, add your fittings and it's ready to go.
A good, clear siphon is always the goal at racking time. The
key to a clean, clear finish is to be able to siphon the “good stuff” off
without disturbing the "bad stuff" in the process. It’s not easy to lift a full
6 gal. carboy up on the counter or table to get the height you need to siphon
into the secondary fermenter without disturbing the “fine silt”. The carboy or
fermenter sitting in the KegLegs is already at the correct height to siphon into
another vessel, without disturbing it, nice and clear. Then, that vessel can be
placed in the Legs for the secondary ferment or whatever without disruption, for
an extra clear siphon when finished.
We've talked to supply shops in our area that said the home
brewing and wine making crowd is growing and there is demand for new and better
equipment. Seems that the “serious” home brewer is acquiring better quality
equipment, which in turn helps produce a better product and some status too.
There are estimated more than 1.5 million home brewers and 3 million +
winemakers. 500+ brew supply shops and twice that for wine stuff. The KegLegs
will also handle 5 and 6 gallon carboys, the most popular fermenter for beer and
wine. We're working on a "Sanke" style conical fermenter that will fit in the
KegLegs and a few other cool ideas that are so affordable most home brewers will
be using them.
Let's get brewin with KegLegs!
10 Gallons of beer or wine weighs over 80 lbs., a 1/2
barrel keg weighs in at 30 Lbs empty. Don't try to lift 110 Lbs of wort, especially
boiling hot. KegLegs can easily handle the load and move it where you
need it without the risk of spilling, splashing or getting scalded.
KegLegs are a serious home brewing and winemaking tool
made for the personal, professional micro brewer or vintner.
You can view a .PDF drawing of some brewing process
